Prabhash Joshi

(July 15, 1936 – November 5, 2009)

Well known journalist and writer and Gandhian Prabhash Joshi was Prabhash Joshi was born on 15 July 1936 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He is better known for changing the definition of Hindi journalism.

Prabhash Joshi started his career with Nayi Duniya. He also worked as the resident editor of Indian Express at Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Delhi. Later he became the founder editor of Jansatta Hindi daily in 1983. This newspaper created a milestone not only in Hindi journalism but in whole Indian journalistic arena. He was the person who changed the form and shape of journalism. He retired from Jansatta in 1995. After he continued as the chief editorial advisor.

Prabhash Joshi was very much known for his straight forward view on all the contemporary topics. He was a popular television commentator as well. He column in Jansatta ‘Kagad Kare’ was very famous for his excellent comments and views. ‘Hindu Hone ka Dharma’ is a very popular book written by him. He was also known for his writing on cricket. He was very fond of cricket and he got heart attack after the match between India and Australia and after the lose of Tendulkar’s wicket. From last 20 years particularly after the demolition of Babari Masjid he continuously wrote against the forces of religious fundamentalist. In last two years of his life he involved himself with the discourse of ‘Hind Swaraj’ and emphasised on the need of rereading of the classic.

He died of a heart attack in New Delhi on 5th Nov 2009. He was 72 year old. His wife is Usha Joshi. Sandeep and Sopan are his son and Sonal is his daughter.
